11 March 2016 at 1711 GMT the GEOS International Emergency Response Coordination Center (IERCC) received a 911/SOS alert from a Garmin inReach device in the Tasman Sea, off the coast of New Zealand.   IERCC personnel contacted local emergency services and informed them of the activation. SAR personnel responded to the location and transported a male who became stranded on a life raft due to his vessel sinking. The individual was picked up by a helicopter and transported to a secure location on shore. No injuries were reported with this incident.
